Volunteer Info

All families are required to either volunteer or donate the equivalent value of their required hours. For Mite and Mini-Mite families, we require 5 volunteer hours per family. For all other programs, we require 10 volunteer hours per family.

New this season: Families are required to complete 2.5 additional hours per additional athlete in the program. Also, families are expected to complete half of their required hours at our home tournaments. This can be either their athletes tournaments or a different home tournament. We have also removed the option to buy out your volunteer hours. Even if you can only complete a few hours, that's better than none at all.

See the section further down the page for examples of how volunteer hours are calculated. Any families who do not complete the required hours will be billed at the end of the season at the rate of $40 per hour.

Why do we charge for volunteer hours?

Volunteering keeps the overall cost of registration as low as possible for our members. In 2026, association members completed over 2000 hours of volunteer time. At our rate of $40 per hour, that equals over $80,000 of value to the association. Among other things, volunteering saves the association from having to hire people to help with our tournament concessions and game operations, which are significant income sources for the association. Each year, the large majority of our families complete their required hours, with some completing significantly more than required. Those who are unable to contribute their time are still expected to contribute in other ways.

What can I do to volunteer?

We do need as much volunteer help as we can get and there are many ways you can be of assistance. We require volunteer help at SSYHA events and fundraisers, as well as home tournaments and league weekends. Assistant Coaching and Team Managing are other ways to fulfill your volunteer requirements. If you have other skills that may be helpful to the organization, we are always looking for new and creative ways to involve our membership. These may include but are not limited to: Fundraising, event planning, culinary, executive coaching, leadership, management training, organization development, video, photography, graphic design. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any ideas or suggestions on how you may be able to assist the organization.

Examples: If you have one athlete in 12U Coed and another in 15U Girls, you would be required to volunteer 12.5 hours. If you have one athlete in 12U Coed and another in 8U Mites, you would be required to volunteer 12.5 hours. If you have one athlete in 8U Mites and another in 6U Mites, you would be required to volunteer 7.5 hours. If you have one athlete in 12U Coed, one athlete in 10U Girls, and a third athlete in 8U Mites, you would be required to volunteer 15 hours.
